Computer Science Department Hosted CS Seminar Series on November 1
The Computer Science Department at Loyola University Chicago recently hosted a CS Seminar Series on Friday, November 1st, featuring two distinguished speakers from the fields of cybersecurity, mobile networking, and digital compliance. The event took place in Coffey Hall's McCormick Lounge and provided an engaging afternoon filled with insightful talks, networking opportunities, and a shared meal.
Attendees had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Sang-Yoon Chang, an associate professor from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, and Kevin Woghiren, the Director of Digital Compliance at United Airlines. The seminar explored topics ranging from securing mobile networks and blockchain systems to the unique cybersecurity challenges facing the aviation industry.

- Cybersecurity & the Aviation Industry
Talk by Kevin Woghiren (Director of Digital Compliance at United Airlines) Kevin Woghiren discussed the unique challenges of cybersecurity within the aviation sector, focusing on regulatory frameworks and how United Airlines manages compliance to ensure digital security. Woghiren, a 2010 graduate of Loyola's CS Department, brought a wealth of experience from his roles at United Airlines, General Electric, and McDonald’s Corporation. - Securing the Next Generation of Networked Systems: Challenges and Solutions in Mobile Networking and Distributed Blockchain
Talk by Dr. Sang-Yoon Chang (University of Colorado Colorado Springs) Dr. Chang provided insights into the growing importance of security in emerging networked systems. His presentation addressed vulnerabilities in current 4G/5G cellular networks and discussed the security of distributed blockchain systems. With an extensive background in cybersecurity and applied cryptography, Dr. Chang explored potential cryptographic and data-driven solutions to mitigate these challenges.
The Computer Science Department invited students, faculty, and the broader community to attend this seminar to gain a deeper understanding of challenges in cybersecurity and mobile computing.
About the Speakers:
- Dr. Sang-Yoon Chang is an associate professor at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, with expertise in cybersecurity, computer networking, mobile computing, and distributed systems. He serves as the director of the PhD in Security program at UCCS and is also involved in the Silicon Valley Cybersecurity Institute.
- Kevin Woghiren is the Director of Digital Compliance at United Airlines, where he oversees IT and cybersecurity compliance. He is a Loyola alumnus and currently resides in Chicago with his family.
